Before Bikram Yoga & Hot Hatha Yoga DVD

This video is called Before Bikram Yoga & Hot Hatha YogaTM because it utilizes the ancient public domain Hatha postures or poses (also called asanas). A yogi named Bikram Choudhury popularized and basically “branded” these ancient asanas employing an intense approach, in a certain order, in certain environmental conditions.

His own book says, “In this book, you will learn the Hatha Yoga asanas as set down by Patanjali over 4,000 years ago. This Hatha Yoga is for everyone and everybody.” This video contains those ancient Hatha poses and their original names. We are not in any way attempting to duplicate his style or what he teaches. Nor are we affiliated with him or anyone he is involved or associated with including his teachers, associations, projects or companies. This video uses a Hatha instructor, Jennifer Lynn, of the Studio Maui, to demonstrate the ancient Hatha postures only.

The sequence may or may not be in the same order as Bikram’s style, so if you wish to learn that, you may be able to find it online, from someone who knows it, from his book at a library or bookstore, or take classes from his certified teachers. Personally, we don’t believe the order is the key to health benefits, but rather the hyperthermia.

Hot Bikram? Hot Hatha, "hot yoga" or whatever? Heat is also involved in various yoga systems now. However it's branded, it involves doing a yoga style in natural or artificially (sauna like) hot conditions, allegedly to mimic certain areas of India at certain times of the year and time in history.

Sweating and inducing fever-like conditions has long been a tradition in many cultures for both health and spiritual benefits. I.e., Native American sweat lodges, hot tubs, jetted tubs and saunas. We spoke to an MD about this and were told its called hyperthermia and has proven, as well as anecdotal health benefits. So when you do an aerobic exercise or "hot yoga", what is having the most benefits? It seems like it may be beneficial to combine them.

We sometimes do our favorite, Tibetan YogaTM, which we believe to be the oldest, at about 105 degrees with about 40% humidity. Tibetan YogaTM also has unique energy balancing techniques that can be done anytime, anywhere, in a couple of minutes. You can even do them privately in a bathroom stall during a break!
